Poganda Beach in Banggai Laut

Poganda Beach is one of the beaches in Banggai Laut Regency, Central Sulawesi, which is gaining recognition among tourists for its pristine natural condition and crystal-clear sea views. The beach is located on the eastern coast of Peleng Island, the second largest island in the Banggai Islands after Banggai Island.

Location and Access

Administratively, Poganda Beach falls within the territory of Banggai Laut Regency. To reach this location, travelers usually depart from the town of Luwuk, Banggai Regency. From Syukuran Aminuddin Amir Airport in Luwuk, the journey continues by land transport to a ferry port, such as Tobing Port or Salakan. The crossing to Peleng Island uses a ferry or motorboat, followed by a land journey to the beach.

Access to Poganda is not yet as easy as other popular tourist destinations. The road to the beach is paved, but in several spots, it remains narrow and winding. However, this condition actually keeps the beach uncrowded and naturally preserved.

Beach Characteristics

Poganda Beach has several distinct features that set it apart from other beaches in Central Sulawesi:

  1. Clean white sand – The sand on this beach is yellowish-white, fine, and largely free of litter. The shoreline is quite wide, especially during low tide.

  2. Large granite boulders – Along several parts of the beach, there are large, rounded granite boulders. These rocks resemble those found at Tanjung Tinggi Beach in Belitung, but vary more in size and are scattered along the coastline.

  3. Clear and calm sea waters – Due to its position, which is somewhat sheltered by the landmass of Peleng Island and small offshore islets, the waves at Poganda are relatively calm. The water is exceptionally clear; the sandy seabed and shallow coral reefs can be seen directly from the surface without diving.

Underwater Life

The waters surrounding Poganda are part of the Coral Triangle region, known for its high marine biodiversity. In shallow areas, seagrass meadows and fringing coral reefs serve as habitats for various reef fish species.

One of the most sought-after species in Banggai waters is the Banggai cardinalfish (Pterapogon kauderni), an endemic fish species found only in the Banggai Islands. This small fish features a black-and-white striped pattern and often seeks shelter among sea urchin spines. The presence of this fish serves as a special attraction for tourists who go snorkeling or simply observe from the surface.

Tourist Activities

Visitors coming to Poganda Beach generally engage in the following activities:

  • Snorkeling – Thanks to the clear water and calm waves, snorkeling can be enjoyed directly from the shoreline. Shallow coral reefs with small fish are easily found not far from the beach line.
  • Photography – Large granite boulders and gradient-colored sea waters make for compelling photographic subjects, especially during the morning or evening.
  • Camping – The spacious beach area and lack of permanent structures make Poganda suitable for camping. However, facilities are still minimal, so visitors must bring their own equipment.
  • Enjoying local cuisine – Around the beach, there are food stalls or local residents selling grilled fish and traditional Banggai dishes at affordable prices.

Facilities and Field Conditions

Currently, facilities at Poganda Beach remain limited. There are no large hotels or resorts near the beach. A few simple homestays owned by locals are available at low rates. Public toilets and food stalls exist, but in small numbers. Cellular phone signals are also unstable in certain areas.

For travelers who wish to stay more comfortably, more accommodation options are available in the center of Salakan Town or Banggai, although the distance is quite far from the beach.

Important Notes

  • Bring cash – ATMs and non-cash payments are not widely available around the beach area.
  • Maintain cleanliness – Plastic waste is an issue across many remote beaches. Visitors are advised to bring their own trash bags and leave nothing behind but footprints.
  • Respect the local community – Most residents work as fishermen. Interact politely and, if hiring a guide or renting a boat, agree on the price in advance.

Conclusion

Poganda Beach offers clean coastal scenery, crystal-clear sea waters, and a tranquil atmosphere. Although access and facilities remain limited, this actually adds value for travelers seeking destinations that are not yet overcrowded. With proper management and responsible tourism, this beach has the potential to become one of the marine tourism highlights in Central Sulawesi.
