Paisu Pok Lake on Peleng Island, Banggai, is one of the clearest freshwater lakes in Indonesia. Underwater visibility can reach 10–15 meters, revealing tree trunks long submerged beneath the surface—clearly visible from above like a quiet, natural art installation. Even though photos of this lake have circulated widely on social media, visitor numbers actually remain relatively low. One of the main reasons is accessibility; traveling there requires travelers to fly to Luwuk, cross by ferry to Peleng Island, and continue overland along roads that are partially in poor condition.
For those willing to undertake the journey, the first question that usually arises is: when is the best time to visit?
Where is Paisu Pok Lake Located?
Paisu Pok Lake is located in Luk Panenteng Village, North Bulagi District, Banggai Kepulauan Regency, Central Sulawesi. The lake is situated on Peleng Island, the largest island in the Banggai Islands. It is located about 23 kilometers from Leme-Leme Port on Peleng Island, and from the parking area, visitors only need to walk for 5–10 minutes to reach the edge of the lake.
Luk Panenteng Village is the most strategic location to find accommodation. From homestays near the bay, the lake can be reached on foot in ten minutes walking through the village.
Why Should You Visit Paisu Pok Lake?
Paisu Pok is no ordinary lake. The name “Paisu Pok” comes from the local Banggai language, referring to the dark-looking lake bottom—not because the water is murky, but because the water is so clear that organic material at the bottom of the lake is clearly visible. The depth of this lake ranges between 5 to 15 meters at certain points.
What makes it special is the combination of crystal-clear water, shifting blue color gradations throughout the day, and an authentic, untouched village atmosphere. Simple gazebos line the shore of the lake, and visitors can rent paddleboards, snorkeling equipment, or small wooden boats to explore the lake’s waters.
What Makes Paisu Pok Lake Special? There are several things that make Paisu Pok special compared to other lakes in Indonesia:
Exceptional water clarity. Underwater visibility can reach 10–15 meters. On clear days, the lake surface reflects the silhouettes of surrounding hills and gazebos like a giant mirror.
Water color that shifts throughout the day. In the morning, the water tends to look darker and calmer. As the sun rises, gradations of blue, green, and turquoise emerge. These colors look most stunning when direct sunlight hits the water surface.
Relatively easy access from the parking area. Unlike many remote natural destinations in Sulawesi, Paisu Pok can be reached with just a short walk—along a paved path—from the parking lot.
Authentic village atmosphere. Luk Panenteng is a small village offering simple accommodations, local eateries, and a relaxed daily life. Travelers staying here can experience a rhythm of life far from the hustle and bustle of the city.
